Description

1930s/1940s dog mutt bust signed by sculptor Jan Allan. RARE and unique piece, may be one of a kind. Minor chips/markings. Note two chips on back of ears. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Jan Allan was the name used by Elisabeth Anne Philbrick Hall (1917-2009), on all her sculptures designed for Contemporary Arts (CA), founded in 1939 and closed in 1947. She was known as one of the finest American animal sculptors. “…After attending the Massachusetts College of Art, where she studied under artists Raymond Porter and Cyrus Dallin, Hall held many art shows around the Boston area, and earned a national following as an animal sculptress. Her love of nature reached beyond the public art sphere; much of her works were private commissions, which immortalized animals and pets in sculpture for their owners. "I want people to look at my work and feel in some way similar to how I feel about that creature," she once explained. ‘It is as simple as that.’”
